Most Rev. Jesús García Burillo

Bishop Jesús García Burillo was born in Alfamén, Zaragoza, on May 28, 1942. He started his ecclesiastical studies in Valladolid and finished them at the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas de Madrid where he achieved the degree in Theology in 1970 and the PhD in Biblical Theology in 1977.

On July 25, 1971 he was ordained to the priesthood in Valladolid, named Auxiliary Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante on June 19, 1998 and ordained as a bishop in Alicante on September 19, 1998. On January 3, 2003 he was named bishop of Avila and assumed this diocese on February 23.

He was coordinator of the Ekumeno movement in Andalucía (1966-1971) and Chaplain of the Residencia Universitaria de Torreccilla in Valladolid (1971-1975). Curate of the parish church San Andrés de Villaverde in Madrid (1977-1979). He has been Episcopal Vicar of the Diocese of Madrid, of the Vicarage III (1985-1996) and Vicarage VIII (1996-1998). In the Episcopal Conference of Spain he has been member of the Commission of Pastoral (1999-2002), of the Commission of Interreligious Relations (1999-2005), of the Commission of the Clergy (2005-2008) and of the Commission for Consecrated Life and for the Doctrine of the Faith (2008-2011). In November 2009 he was elected President of the Commission for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church and reelected in March 2014 at the CIII Plenary Assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Spain.

In the academic sphere, he has been school teacher from 1962 to 194; Full Professor of Estudio Agustiniano in Valladolid from 1972 to 1974; contributor of CESIC (1974-1976) and professor of the Instituto Internacional de Teología a Distancia in Madrid from 1977 to 1998.
