Dr. Richard Schenk O.P.

Dr. Richard Schenk OP was born in California, USA, in 1951; he is a history of philosophy and theology visiting professor at the Department of Systematic Theology at the Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, where he was president from 2011 to 2014. He is a member of the California province of the Dominican Order since 1971. After following philosophy and theology studies in California, a PhD in Dogmatic Theology at the Ludwig-Maximilans-Universität in Munich (Germany) and a post-doctoral fellowship research for editing medieval texts at the Bayrischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, he became a professor of systematic theology at the Graduate theological Union in Berkeley from 1990 to 2011. He also served during those years in two research centers: from 1991 to 2000 as director of the Institute for Philosophical research of Hannover and from 2005-2006 as director of the Intercultural Center for Faith and Culture studies at the John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC.

He has also taught at the Universität Freiburg and the Emory University in Atlanta. Schenk was Regens Studiorum of the Dominican Order in the western US and Vice-Chancellor of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology. Since 1991 he has been a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and since 2004 a Master of Sacred Theology (STM) in the Dominican Order. He is the founding president of the Academy of Catholic Theology since 2007. After his dissertation, “Die Gnade vollendeter Endlichkeit. Zur transzendentaltheologischen Auslegung thomanischen der Anthropologie” (Freiburger Theologische Studien 135), Herder, Freiburg i. Br. 1989, his works have been developed as diachronic and contemporary talks about philosophical and theological anthropology, including hermeneutics, ecumenical and interfaith perspectives, starting with the critical edition of a medieval text in the pre-Christian religions: Robert Kilwardby, Quaestiones in librum quartum Sententiarum (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Veröffentlichungen der Kommission für die Herausgabe ungedruckter Texte aus der mittelalterlichen Geisteswelt 17), Munich 1993.
